Steve Johnson says the timing of the Carlos Alcaraz and Juan Carlos Alcaraz is "a little concerning" as this usually doesn't happen with high-profile partnerships.

On Wednesday, two weeks before the start of the new season, Alcaraz decided to part ways with his coach of seven years, Ferrero.

For many reasons, the tennis public found the split shocking. The first and biggest reason is the fact that the world No. 1 and Ferrero enjoyed massive success together and that they were coming off another huge season. Also, the fact that the 22-year-old often spoke highly about the 2003 French Open champion and what they had been able to accomplish together.

Johnson: The timing is a little concerning... I didn't see the Alcaraz and Ferrero split coming

I think the timing is a little concerning. Usually with the big time partnerships the Rogers, Rafas and the Novaks. They will end after a Slam, or someone will be like this is our last event together. I did not see this coming," former four-time ATP champion Johnson said on the Nothing Major Show.

Since the 2026 season is just around the corner, the majority of players have already formed their teams for the new season. And that means that Alcaraz may face limited options on the coaching market.

However, Johnson expects Alcaraz to add someone to join Samuel Lopez in his coaching staff. The American also mentioned Rafael Nadal's former coach Carlos Moya, and Spanish Davis Cup team captain David Ferrer as options.

I think so. 100% he brings somebody in. My gut tells me somebody like Moya or Ferrer. We have talked about this a lot. Does coaching really matter? At this stage, maybe its not so important for Carlos. But getting to where he did, that was amazing from Juan Carlos Ferrero and what they did together," Johnson explained.
