Ons Jabeur may be pregnant and set to be out of action for quite some time, but that doesn't mean that the Tunisian will be away from the Tour as the three-time Grand Slam finalist has accepted a mentorship role in Zeynep Sonmez's team.
Sonmez, a 23-year-old rising Turkish star, enjoyed a breakout season in 2024 - which she capped off by becoming a WTA champion in Merida. This past October, the Turk achieved a career-high ranking of No. 69 in the world but has since plummeted to No. 112 in the world.
Earlier this month, Jabeur announced that she and her husband Karim Mamoun were expecting their first child and that the baby was due to arrive in April. In the meantime, the former world No. 2 plans to assist Sonmez along with her long-time coach Issam Jellali and assistant coach Srr Can Ylmaz. Mehmet Bayraktar, who has already been working the 23-year-old, will also remain a part of the team.
Jabeur plans to return to tennis
Took a little break to reset and recharge. Turns out, weve been planning the cutest comeback ever. Soon well be welcoming our tiniest teammate. The court will have to wait a little longer," the 2022 and 2023 Wimbledon finalist announced on Instagram earlier this month.
A few days after announcing the pregnancy news, Jabeur also confirmed her intention to return to tennis at some point.
I dont have the right time right now. But when Im ready I want to come back for sure," the 31-year-old told the WTA website.
It remains to be seen if Jabeur's presence can help Sonmez elevate her game to a new level in 2026.
