Matt Wallace was one of the golfers who believed he would earn a spot on the team, but his latest performance was likely the end of hope for the seasoned golfer.
This could be felt even after the tournament, when Matt Wallace cried in an emotional interview, aware that he did not have such a great chance to perform at this prestigious competition.
The captain of the European team, Luke Donald, had a difficult task, as Wallace was not in his plans.

In an interview with the media, the captain spoke about the reasons for his decisions, revealing that it was extremely difficult for him to make a phone call to the 35-year-old golfer, whohoped to be part of this teamuntil the last moment.
Donald called him 10 or 15 minutes after his emotional interview, while stressing that he was equally emotional.
However, when you are the captain of the team, it is clear that you have to take responsibility, no matter how difficult it was.
"Yeah, they are all very difficult for different reasons. Yeah, I called him 10 or 15 minutes after that emotional interview he did in Crans, and I felt very emotional for him. It just shows to me what the Ryder Cup means to these guys and how they are trying to desperately make the team and be a part of it.

You know, Matt has made no secret of that over the years, and he's come very close a number of times. I think that call was tough but to be honest they are all pretty tough. I think these guys all really wanted to be on that team.."- Donald said.
Wallace's reaction
Matt Wallace has yet to publicly address the decision, but he was aware that it would be difficult to secure a place in the team.
Fighting for a place in the team all season and then being left out is certainly a moment he will not forget. However, Matt wants to mentally bounce back and try to earn the trust of the captain in the next years.
