The move will come before the league starts on Wednesday and will net the Packers more than $19.5 million in additional salary cap space for this season.Jenkins, 30, had one year remaining on a four-year, $68 million extension that at the time made him one of the highest-paid guards in the NFL. He made the Pro Bowl as a left guard (2020 and 2022).A year ago, when the Packers signed guard Aaron Banks in free agency, they asked Jenkins to move to center. He skipped most of the offseason program in part because he wanted the Packers to adjust his contract to ensure he had more guaranteed money to offset potential earnings losses that might come by changing to a less lucrative position. But the Packers refused to alter his deal.Jenkins started the first nine games of the season at center before a fractured ankle on Nov. 10 against the Eagles ended his season. The Packers informed Jenkins of his release one day after they signed his replacement at center, Sean Rhyan, to a three-year, $33 million contract on Sunday. With the release of Jenkins and the trade earlier on Monday that sent Rashan Gary to the Cowboys, it left quarterback Jordan Love as the longest-tenured Packers player still on the roster. Both Jenkins and Gary were drafted by the Packers in 2019, one year before Love.
