
EmailPrintOpen Extended ReactionsThe Washington Commanders are re-signing backup quarterback Marcus Mariota on a one-year, $7 million deal, according to NFL Network.Mariota can make up to $11 million in incentives, per the report.Mariota, 32, started eight games last season for Washington and appeared in 11 as starter Jayden Daniels battled injuries. Mariota threw for 1,695 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions, but the Commanders could only win two of his eight starts.In 2024, Mariota relieved Daniels in three games -- two because of injuries with the game in doubt. In those two games -- both victories -- Mariota threw for a combined 366 yards and four touchdowns. He completed a five-yard pass with two seconds remaining in the regular season finale to beat the Dallas Cowboys.Mariota developed a strong relationship with Daniels, becoming a mentor to someone who, like him, also was a Heisman Trophy winner and second-overall pick of the draft. The Tennessee Titans picked Mariota with the second choice in the 2015 draft.He spent five seasons with Tennessee, enjoying a strong second year when he threw for 3,426 yards, 26 touchdowns and only nine interceptions. Mariota played two years with the Las Vegas Raiders, one with the Atlanta Falcons and another with the Philadelphia Eagles before joining Washington.He has started 82 games, thrown for 17,879 yards, 107 touchdowns, and 62 interceptions.
