EmailPrintOpen Extended ReactionsThe Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers made a second trade this week, with the Oilers receiving forwards Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach on Wednesday.Dickinson and Dach became the latest players to join the Oilers from the Blackhawks, while forward Andrew Mangiapane and a conditional 2027 first-round pick are going in the other direction.The Blackhawks are also retaining 50% of Dickinson's salary. The 30-year-old is in the second year of a two-year deal worth $4.25 million annually.On Tuesday, the Blackhawks traded defenseman Connor Murphy to the Oilers for a 2028 second-round pick.Working with the Blackhawks on a second trade in as many days comes as the two-time defending Western Conference champions seek to strengthen their roster for a bid to reach a third straight Stanley Cup Final.Edmonton (30-24-8) entered Wednesday in third place in the Pacific Division. The Oilers were two points behind the division-leading Vegas Golden Knights while being a point ahead of the Seattle Kraken for the second and final Western Conference wild-card spot.Dickinson's profile as a two-way center who can be trusted in various situations adds to a top-nine center dynamic that already includes a pair of Hart Trophy winners in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The Oilers also have natural centers such as Trent Frederic, Adam Henrique and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who are currently on the wing but can play down the middle.Dickinson, who has six goals and 13 points in 47 games, is another player who can provide that flexibility of playing at center or at left wing while also offering the Oilers another forward they can use on their penalty kill. Dickinson logged 103 short-handed minutes for his fourth consecutive season of more than 100 minutes played on the penalty kill.Dach is another forward who can also play on the edge or down the middle. He has three goals and nine points in 53 games in his second full NHL season.PuckPedia projects the Oilers now have minus-$300,000 in deadline salary cap space ahead of the 3 p.m. Friday cutoff. That means they'll need to shed or trade cap space if they're looking to make at least one more move.Mangiapane, who is in the first of a two-year deal worth $3.6 million, will seek to revive what has been a trying season. He signed as a free agent with the Oilers after scoring 14 goals and 28 points with the Washington Capitals during the 2024-25 campaign.He struggled for consistency in Edmonton with seven goals and 14 points in 52 games in a season that has him on pace to finish with 11 goals. That would be the fewest he has scored since his rookie season in 2018-19.The Oilers placed Mangiapane on waivers with general manager Stan Bowman telling reporters Monday that it was for salary cap reasons rather than performance.Mangiapane now joins the Blackhawks (23-28-10), who are 11 points behind the Kraken for that last wild-card spot and 13 points clear of the Vancouver Canucks for the lowest total in the NHL.
