Spanish Davis Cup team captain David Ferrer stated that losing the final to Italy was "not a tragedy or the end of the world" as the 2013 French Open finalist wanted to be positive and focus on what they had been able to accomplish after being hit with a big setback just before the start of the event in Bologna.

Just before the start of the Davis Cup Final 8, world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz picked up an unfortunate hamstring injury and had to withdraw - that left Spain without their best player but also without any top-30 players representing them in Bologna.

Still, a team consisting of Jaume Munar, Pablo Carreno Busta, Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez managed to upset the Czech Republic and Germany to set up a final meeting against hosts Italy. While the Spanish side fought hard and had the entire Bologna crowd against them, they couldn't pull off another upset as Matteo Berrettini beat Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3 6-4 before Flavio Cobolli edged out Jaume Munar 1-6 7-6 (5) 7-5.

Ferrer: I don't see the final loss as a tragedy or the end of the world

"Regarding this team, I must say above all that they are wonderful people, and that is the most important thing... I really enjoyed seeing how they supported each other and gained more and more confidence. For me, as captain, it's wonderful. It's clear that we lost the Davis Cup final, but I don't see it as a tragedy: I would rather see it as something fantastic, to be so close to winning a seventh Davis Cup for our country. In the end, that's sport and you have to accept it, it's not the end of the world," Ferrer said in the post-final press conference.

Spain remains on six Davis Cup titles. Their last triumph in the competition came in 2019, when they were led by former 22-time Grand Slam championRafael Nadal.
