Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is set to miss roughly two weeks after suffering a right hamstring strain, ESPNs Shams Charania confirmed Monday.

The 24-year-old will be re-evaluated in one week, but early reports suggest the team plans to be cautious with its franchise cornerstone.

Edwards sustained the injury just minutes into Sundays matchup against the Indiana Pacers, leaving after scoring five points and grabbing one rebound in limited action. Minnesota managed to close out a 114-110 win to move to 2-1 on the season, but the loss of their top scorer is a major blow to start the year.

The injury occurred in the games opening minutes and the guard was initially diagnosed with hamstring tightness when the Timberwolves ruled him out for the game.

The injury interrupts what was shaping up to be another dominant campaign for Edwards, whos coming off two consecutive All-NBA selections and three straight All-Star appearances.

Last season, he averaged 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals while shooting 39.5 percent from beyond the arc, numbers that placed him firmly among the leagues elite young talents.

Minnesota will have to navigate upcoming home games against the Nuggets and Lakers without their leader, followed by a tough three-game Eastern road trip versus the Hornets, Nets, and Knicks. Based on the initial timetable, Edwards could miss seven or eight contests before returning.

For a team eyeing another deep playoff run, keeping pace in the early going without their most dynamic offensive weapon will be the ultimate test.

Edwards is in his sixth NBA season and coming off two consecutive All-NBA selections and his third straight All-Star season.

His time in Minnesota has been quite successful, since the Timberwolves have made four consecutive playoff appearances with Edwards, including two straight trips to the Western Conference finals.
