Thibaut Courtois is poised to sign a contract extension at Real Madrid to keep the goalkeeper at the club until 2028, according to a report. Two-time Champions League winner Courtois, 34, joined Los Blancos from Chelsea for 35 million in 2018 and has shone at the start of head coach Jose Mourinhos second spell in charge.Courtois current contract expires at the end of the campaign but the Belgium international has reached a verbal agreement on new terms, transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has said. Why Real Madrid have given Thibaut Courtois a new contractMadrid spent 223 million this summer but Courtois has been arguably their most important player during their first eight league matches of the season and made seven saves in their 2-1 home win over Inter in their Champions League opener.Mourinhos side faced 12 second-half attempts at home to a dangerous Villarreal team on Saturday but earned a 1-0 win in a result that already looks vital with leaders Barcelona six points ahead of their most familiar title rivals, who have lost twice in the 2026/27 Liga.Courtois made four saves during the game and prevented 0.87 goals, according to Sofascore, who also pointed out his value as a partial sweeper, taking 46 touches and completing 25 of 36 passes.Thibaut Courtois injuries: How long will he stay at Madrid?Real Madrid have continued to trust Courtois but the decision to only give him a one-year extension may reflect the series of injury problems suffered by their most reliable goalkeeper.Courtois, who has said he wants to stay for at least four more years, has missed 32 matches for Madrid and Belgium since returning from a knee injury that kept him out between August 2023 and March 2024.While at Chelsea, Courtois was also sidelined for 20 club and international games in late 2015 with his first major knee injury.Thibaut Courtois and Jose MourinhoMourinho inherited Courtois during his second spell in charge of Chelsea between 2013 and 2015 and the pair won the 2014/15 Premier League title together, with Courtois becoming an English champion again in 2016/17.I have a very good relationship with Jose Mourinho, Courtois has said. He is the best goalkeeper in the world. With this attitude, he proved that he will go down in the history of the Champions League as a great, no matter what happens.
