Friday Night SmackDown just made its three-hour debut on the USA Network, but it might not stay that way for long. While the blue brand officially expanded its runtime this week, WWE may be planning to scale things back before 2026 is over.
On the latest Bryan and Vinny Show, Bryan Alvarez revealed that SmackDowns new three-hour format is expected to follow the same pattern as 2025meaning it could return to a two-hour block in the second half of the year.
The strategy has more to do with the networks scheduling than WWEs creative direction. Alvarez noted that USA Network likely wants to use SmackDown as a lead-in for a new program in the second half of 2026something akin to the short-lived Braun Strowman reality project that aired in 2025. That kind of lineup shift would require SmackDown to return to its traditional two-hour window.
Alvarez also shared his thoughts on the runtime itself. While admitting three hours is too long for any wrestling show, he credited the first episode of 2026 for making good use of the extra time.
The episode featured appearances by several newcomers including Trick Williams, Jordynne Grace, JeVon Evans, and Matt Cardona. The influx of talent helped justify the additional hourfor now. With WWE loading the roster and networks juggling schedules, SmackDowns long-term runtime is still up in the air. Fans enjoying the expanded format might want to soak it in while it lasts.
