Iga Swiatek admits she is not really sure what Poland needs to do to win the United Cup simply because she feels her team has had some bad luck at the tournament.

In each of the past three years, Poland came close to winning the mixed team event taking place in Australia at the start of the season.

In 2023, Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz led Poland to the semifinal before their nation was beaten by the United States. The following year, the Polish side went a step furher and reached the final before suffering a heartbreaking 1-2 defeat to Germany after Hurkacz blew two match points against Alexander Zverev.

This past season, Poland enjoyed another deep run at the United Cup before it finished the same way as it did in 2023 - with a semifinal loss to the United Cup.

Heading into the 2026 United Cup, Poland is once again regarded a favorite for the title since it will be led by Swiatek and Hurkacz.

Swiatek: We've played well but we've had a bit of bad luck

"I dont know what we have to do. I feel like we played really well in recent years, but weve had a bit of bad luck, especially against Germany, where we had match points to win the tournament. But we have to take it step by step from the beginning. Theres no point in thinking about winning now, because first we have the group stage matches. I think well focus on that," the six-time Grand Slam champion told Eurosport Poland.

Besides Swiatek and Hurkacz, the Polish team will also be represented by Katarzyna Kawa, Katarzyna Piter, Daniel Michalski and Jan Zielinski. Poland was placed in Group F in Sydney, where they will battle against Germany and the Netherlands.

On Saturday, Swiatek will kick off her 2026 season by taking on 40th-ranked German Eva Lys. The Pole leads their head-to-head 3-0.
