Gael Monfils declared his final season on the Tour "a huge chapter of my life," and revealed that his farewell would be dedicated to his daughter Skai.
On October 1st, the 39-year-old Frenchman announced his decision to retire following the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Monfils, who turned pro in 2004, is slated to start his final year in Auckland between January 12-17 - where he is the defending champion. After making his fifth Auckland appearance, the former world No. 6 will head to Melbourne for his final Australian Open.
The week before Monfils kicks off his Auckland title defense, the tournament will stage a women's event. The Frenchman's wife Elina Svitolina is scheduled to play.

In October 2022, Monfils and Svitolina welcomed their first child, a baby girl Skai. And the French tennis player hopes to make his last season special for his daughter.

"Final season. Today, Im heading out for what will be my last season of tennis. A huge chapter of my life," the 39-year-old wrote on Instagram.
"Before I left, my daughter said to me: 'Daddy, what if we put on our masks and become superheroes?' She with her Spider-Man mask, Me with my Black Panther mask. Because in her eyes, I will always be a hero. And because through her eyes, we can face the world together.
"I leave with that invisible mask on my heart. With pride. With gratitude. With love. One last season. For her. For me. For everything tennis has given me."

In one of his past interviews, Monfils admitted that he was thinking about walking away from pro tennis during the pandemic. But it was his wife Svitolina who encouraged him to keep going during the pandemic and also after the birth of their daughter.

Monfils will turn 40 in September so that's the age when his pro tennis journey should end.
