Coach Wim Fissette has highlighted that Iga Swiatek is aiming to do major things in 2026 as the 24-year-old Pole wants to win multiple Grand Slams and also return to the world No. 1 spot.

After having a rough first part of 2025 and losing at the French Open for the first time since 2021, Swiatek turned things around in the second part of the year by winning her first Wimbledon title and also collecting the Cincinnati and Seoul titles. Also, the Pole went from being ranked at No. 8 in June to finishing the season as the world No. 2.

"The priorities are not changing. Iga wants to be the best in the world. We want to win a Grand Slam, hopefully more than one. We intend to be as close as possible to the No. 1 in the ranking," Fissette told Polish tennis journalist Dominik Senkowski.

Swiatek is closing the rankings gap on Sabalenka

In October 2024, Swiatek lost the world No. 1 spot. Since then, Sabalenka has been sitting at the top position. At times this year, the Belarusian had a massive lead over the Polish tennis star in the rankings. While she still firmly sits at the throne with 10,870 ranking points, the Pole is narrowing the gap and follows with 8,395 points.

On paper, Sabalenka still has a very solid lead over Swiatek. But the Belarusian tennis star will have many more points to defend in the first part of 2026 than Swiatek - so you can guess what that means.

When it comes to Grand Slams, Swiatek has six Slams in her collection. The Pole won multiple Grand Slams in 2022, and since then has been winning one Major per year.
