The future of Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis remains one of the NBAs biggest question marks, and now a well-connected New York insider has added new fuel to the rumor mill.
With AD continuing to battle injuries and the Mavericks evaluating their long-term direction, SNYs Ian Begley says the Knicks are preparing to monitor the situation closely, and potentially act if Dallas opens the door.
Begley was asked whether the Knicks will pursue a rim-protecting big man at the trade deadline. After listing several logical options, he shifted directly to Davis.
This is stating the obvious, but Im sure the Knicks would at least check in with Dallas if/when Anthony Davis becomes available, Begley said. You may scoff at the idea, but the Knicks want to win a title this season. If Dallas is offering Davis at a below-market cost, Im sure the Knicks will at least give the move some thought. But this, again, is stating the obvious. The Mavs will get calls from nearly all NBA teams if/when they make Davis available.
The Knicks have been aggressive in recent seasons, stockpiling assets and maintaining flexibility for a superstar trade. Davis, when healthy, remains one of the leagues elite interior defenders and a championship-caliber piece. But health has been the key issue.
Dallas is aware of that league-wide interest, and isnt shutting the door on discussions, according to Marc Stein.
League sources say that the Mavericks still intend to field any trade interest in Davis that emerges over the next two-plus months with the prospect of an actual trade obviously dependent on offer quality, Stein wrote. Davis, remember, has only been healthy enough to appear in 14 of 48 regular-season games since becoming a Maverick due to serious adductor and calf setbacks.
