Nick Kyrgios claims he has noticed some "miraculous" improvement with his knee over the last months and that makes him very optimistic ahead of the Australian Open.
After undergoing knee surgery in 2023 and surgically repairing his wrist the following year, Kyrgios launched his long-awaited comeback in the first week of the 2025 season in Brisbane. Between January and March, the Australian appeared in a total of four tournaments and he battled wrist pain and discomfort on every occasion. As if the wrist issues weren't enough, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist's knee also flared up in the spring and he hasn't played since.
At the start of this week, it was confirmed that Kyrgios would take on Aryna Sabalenka in the Battle of the Sexes on December 28th in Dubai.
Kyrgios: Don't know what it is but my knee feels like it has gotten younger by a couple of years
"In the last month, I don't know what it is. I was with my masseuse and physio last night and something really has changed with my knee. It's not swelling. It's not feeling bad after a session. I don't know whether to call it a miracle or anything, but my knee feels like it's gotten younger by a couple of years," the 30-year-old said, via the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Kyrgios' big goal was to at least play during this year's grass season. It didn't happen. But now that his knee is doing much better, the former world No. 13 hopes it will stay like that and allow him to prepare well for the Australian Open.
"I don't want to jinx it, but something in it has gone, kind of allowed me to put three, four days of training together on court for an hour-and-a-half, two hours and be able to actually recover and then build on that. So that's been really exciting and I haven't really told anyone. I have a new lease on life on court," Kyrgios said.
