Ben Shelton is set to return to a familiar spot ahead of the Australian Open after the world No. 6 signed up for the ASB Classic in Auckland.

In 2023, a 20-year-old Shelton debuted at the ATP 250 tournament in Auckland after being given a main draw wildcard. After making the round-of-16 in his debut, the American also returned to the ASB Classic in 2024, reaching the semifinal. This year, his campaign at the tournament surprisingly ended after only one match played and a loss to Jakub Mensik.

Shelton may not have enjoyed an impressive run in Auckland at the start of the 2025 season, but he still loves the tournament and intends to return for the 2026 edition.

For me its been great preparation, great matches, and a place that I feel comfortable. I think that to start the year its nice to be somewhere that youre comfortable and feels like home. I enjoy playing there. And Ive played well in the Australian Open after that tournament, and its one that Id like to keep coming back to," the 2024 Auckland semifinalist said in a statement.

Shelton 'really appreciates' the Auckland tournament gesture

As mentioned above, Shelton participated at the 2023 Auckland edition after being given a main draw wildcard by the tournament. And according to ASB Classic tournament director Nicolas Lamperin, the American and his team haven't forgotten that kind gesture.

They really appreciate that we thought of him four years ago, with extending a wildcard invitation. It was the first time he was traveling out of the US. Since then, weve really looked after him, and he's always enjoyed his time in Auckland. So it's great to see that now he's established in the top 10, he doesn't forget about us, and he's still very happy to come back," ASB Classic tournament director Lamperin said.

Since Shelton is set to end the year ranked inside the top-10, there is no doubt that he will be one of the biggest names in Auckland next year and a top favorite for the title.

The 2026 Auckland tournament edition takes place between January 12-17.
