2025 has been a very important year for Joao Fonseca so far. The young Brazilian talent had started the season in the best possible way, showing his enormous potential with consistency and taking away the satisfaction of beating opponents much more experienced than him. His victory over Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open allowed all fans to know his name, not forgetting his first ATP title on the red clay of Buenos Aires thanks to an amazing run. As if that were not enough, the South American player also triumphed in the Challenger tournaments in Canberra and Phoenix.
Some pundits and insiders thought Joao was ready to enter the Top 20 of the ATP rankings in a matter of months, perhaps by the end of this year. However, his level dropped from the spring onwards and he suffered several unexpected defeats. His performances at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open have generated some perplexity among analysts, who have urged fans not to put too much pressure on the shoulders of this very young athlete.
Meligeni talks about Fonseca
Most people hope that Fonseca can achieve the same status as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner by fighting for the top position in the ATP rankings in the future. The truth is that the Brazilian star certainly has incredible talent, but he still has a lot of work to do technically and physically to match that level.
In a long interview with 'Clay', former Brazilian ace Fernando Meligeni expressed some interesting thoughts about his young compatriot: "Fonseca is definitely crazy talented and not even Guga Kuerten was so brilliant at 18-19 years old. Many Brazilian companies want to invest in tennis because of Joao's potential.
He has a great team that takes care of his growth and you just have to be patient, avoiding putting too much pressure on him. Obviously he is not yet at the level of Alcaraz and Sinner, especially from an athletic point of view."
