The US Open final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was dominated by the Spanish ace, who claimed a precious victory in four sets on the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium to win the sixth Major of his young career and return to the top of the ATP rankings.
The 22-year-old from Murcia played arguably the best tournament of his entire career, showing impressive consistency from the first rounds and losing only one set in the entire tournament (in addition to having suffered only three breaks in the space of two weeks).
There is no doubt that the new world No.1 has had tremendous maturation in recent months, especially after the shocking elimination in the second round of the Miami Open against Belgian veteran David Goffin.
That moment allowed Carlitos to make some reflections on himself and his level has risen exceptionally from spring onwards. Alcaraz's season has been really bright so far, considering that he has already won seven titles, including two Grand Slams and three Masters 1000.
Alcaraz was unleashed
The six-time Grand Slam champion will have to defend far fewer points than Sinner until the end of 2025, which is why he will be able to maintain the leadership of the ATP rankings at least until the beginning of next season. The next events Carlos will attend will be the Laver Cup in San Francisco and the Tokyo ATP 500, before the Shanghai Masters 1000 in October.
In a recent conversation with his friend Adriano Panatta, former ATP star and top analyst Paolo Bertolucci analyzed Alcaraz's triumph in New York: "The Spanish champion played really well last Sunday and didn't give the Italian ace a chance. Jannik gave his best but could not do much, having faced a rival who was at the top of his shape. When Carlitos plays like that, he's really hard to beat."
The two-time US Open winner has just started his 37th week as world No.1.
