Before he became one of the top wrestlers in the world, Kenny Omega was grinding it out in WWEs Deep South Wrestling in 2005 under the tutelage of head trainer Bill DeMott. But according to Omega, there was never a real path to success therebecause his own trainer told him outright he wasnt going anywhere.
During a recent Twitch stream, Omega dropped a quote thats raising eyebrows. Bill DeMott at that point was kind of like, Im gonna make sure you never get called up anyway, so you can do whatever the fuck you want.
That comment paints a picture of sabotage coming from the top of the developmental system. Omega said he managed to keep the name Kenny Omega through what he described as a flukemostly because DeMott didnt care. Somehow, that name survived all throughout my life. Even when I was able to go to developmental, I was somehow able to cook up a story to allow myself to be Kenny Omega.
Despite the experience, Omega doesnt seem bitterbut he does sound reflective. Sometimes I wonder how Bill is doing and whats happening with him. I would love to speak with him again, shake his hand. Omega even said he believes DeMott may have been playing up the character fans saw on Tough Enough, calling him probably a nice guy. Probably funny.
But its the never get called up quote thats hitting hard, especially considering the history of other wrestlers accusing DeMott of abuse and bullying. If Omegas comments gain traction, they could bring renewed attention to how WWEs developmental operated under DeMotts leadership.
