Despite the dramatic storyline shift, Cody Rhodes remained a babyface, and it looks like that isnt changing anytime soon.
As reported earlier, Cody was pitched a heel turn that would have seen him sell his soul to The Rock. Rhodes were against the move, citing his strong babyface reactions, major merchandise sales, and significant impact on ticket sales as reasons to keep him a good guy.
On The Pat McAfee Show, The Rock confirmed he was an advocate for the storyline, saying he was interested in how fans would react to Codys potential heel turn. When it comes to giving me your soul, that is what you want, not what the Final Boss wants, The Rock said. So now we go into Elimination Chamber with this idea: will Cody Rhodes sell his soul to the Final Boss? My thought at the time was it was a litmus test to find out, in my opinion, how will fans respond if Cody sold his soul to the Final Boss? Lets get a temperature check on this.
The Rock admitted that fans seemed to embrace the idea of Cody selling his soul, but he didnt feel it was the right time to turn him heel. Not turning Cody heel soon, but eventually down the line, I liked the idea because Cody is a smart guy and a ring general, he said. I think this idea of you giving him a reason to turn way down the road, not based on titles but on his soul and what that means, affects generations and transcends pro wrestling, and fans were loving it.
Despite The Rocks enthusiasm, WWE reportedly has no plans to turn Cody Rhodes heel anytime soon. Sources noted to Fightful Select that the company is focused on keeping Rhodes as a top babyface throughout the year, with strong creative plans in place to maintain his current character.
