EmailPrintOpen Extended ReactionsLIVERPOOL, England -- Rio Ngumoha's reputation must have preceded him. Liverpool's UEFA Champions League clash with Villarreal was only a few minutes old, and already the opposition defenders had begun to double up on the young forward in an attempt to stop him wreaking havoc down the right flank.Their efforts proved futile; Ngumoha provided two outstanding assists to help Liverpool come from 2-0 down to claim a 4-3 victory at Anfield. The England international did not manage to get on the scoresheet, but he produced what was undeniably the most accomplished display of his fledgling senior career, providing Andoni Iraola's side with the impetus required to overcome their sluggish start and secure a third straight win in all competitions."It's up there with one of the best I've played," Ngumoha told Amazon Prime postmatch. "I enjoyed myself and the team helped me a lot. Whenever I get the ball and there's an opportunity to go one v. one or two v. one, I believe in myself. I'll just keep going and be ruthless."Ngumoha came into this season with a point to prove. Having broken into Liverpool's first team as a left winger under Arne Slot last term, the forward has found his route to regular game time in his favored position stymied by the summer arrival of the 123 million Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.The further addition of Vctor Muoz from Osasuna, plus the renaissance of Cody Gakpo, has only served to intensify competition in attack. It is the kind of challenge that some young players might have shied away from, but on the evidence of his most recent display, it has spurred Ngumoha on to new heights."Any position -- right wing, left wing -- I just try my best especially on the ball just to beat my man as best as I can," Ngumoha told ESPN during preseason. "The more I keep learning in training and games, I'll definitely improve. To be adaptable is a skill that I need, definitely."That versatility has paid dividends for Ngumoha over the past few weeks. The 18-year-old started on the right against LASK Linz last week before impressing in the same position in his cameo against Brentford at the weekend.Tuesday night, though, was a coming of age. Ngumoha became the youngest player on record (since 2008-09) to complete five-plus dribbles (7), have 10-plus touches in the opposition box (12) and register an assist (2) in a Champions League match. His relentlessness and ability to torment defenders showed that, while Liverpool might not have signed a like-for-like replacement for the talismanic Mohamed Salah, they still have a potent attacking threat on the right-hand side.Certainly, Ngumoha's flair and dynamism was needed against Villarreal given how poorly Liverpool had started the game. The Reds found themselves a goal down inside four minutes after a lapse from Virgil van Dijk opened the door for Villarreal's Georges Mikautadze to slot home past Alisson.Things went from bad to worse for the hosts shortly before the half-hour mark when Sergi Cardona was given the freedom of the Liverpool penalty area to coolly double Villarreal's lead. It was a rare moment of joy for the left back on an evening when Ngumoha's exploits regularly had him in retreat.A fine Alexis Mac Allister header from a Kostas Tsimikas corner halved the deficit for Liverpool before the break, but it was Ngumoha who really sparked the game into life, seeing off the attentions of three defenders to curl a fabulous cross toward the far post for Ronald Arajo to nod home. The 18-year-old's assist for Mac Allister in the second half was even more impressive as he drove inside from the right and flashed a sumptuous ball across the face of goal. From there, the impressive Mac Allister was only too happy to oblige. The icing on the cake was provided by substitute Florian Wirtz, who netted his first Liverpool goal since April after a cutback from Gakpo.Villarreal made it nervy when Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi finished at the far post three minutes from time. But the Reds managed to hang on, marking the first time they have come from two goals down to win a game in any competition since May 2022, when they beat Villarreal 3-2 to book their spot in the Champions League final.By the time Oluwaseyi scored, Ngumoha was watching the action from the bench, having been substituted to well-deserved standing ovation."I am happy with his attitude," Iraola said of the forward in his postmatch news conference. "He is eager to improve the things we think he needs to improve. He is eager to add more things to his game. He has changed sides a lot. He has played a lot on the right lately."He is feeling so comfortable now. He is adding some shots from the left. He hasn't scored, but he is getting there, and if he can add these small things to his game, it will put him in a better position. That's the good thing with Rio. He is only 18, he's still not the full package. He can add things, fortunately for us also. I hope he can continue the same way. It is not always going to be like this -- there will be ups and downs in the process -- but I'm happy because he is in a great place."While Iraola has plenty of decisions to make ahead of Liverpool's meeting with high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, the inclusion of Ngumoha in his starting lineup must surely now be viewed as a foregone conclusion. The teenager hasn't started a Premier League game since Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Newcastle United on the opening weekend, but he could hardly have delivered a more compelling audition than his display against Villarreal. As the Liverpool players made their way toward the Kop to applaud at the full-time whistle, Duran Duran's "Rio" blasted out from the Anfield speakers. If Ngumoha continues on his current trajectory, it is surely destined to become a regular serenade.
