EmailPrintOpen Extended ReactionsHOUSTON -- Trading for Marvin Harrison Jr. falls right in line with how the Houston Texans continue to attack the wide receiver room: aggressively. The organization has made ample investment into the receiving corps to try to elevate quarterback C.J. Stroud and complement it's No. 1 wideout Nico Collins, but coach DeMeco Ryans insists that the move (trading a second-rounder and sixth-rounder to the Arizona Cardinals) was just to improve the Texans (1-4)."Each year, you just look at the team and you see where you are," Ryans said. "With myself and [general manager] Nick Caserio, it's, 'How can we always improve the team?' That's always the goal for us."If it happens to just be the wide receiver room, maybe not by design that way, but it's like, 'Hey, what's available, what are we willing to give up in terms of getting a player and what does that player offer for us?'"Adding Harrison is the latest move to improve the wideout room since Ryans and Stroud arrived in 2023. The Texans took a big swing in 2024 when they acquired four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills for a second-round pick. Pairing Stroud with Diggs was promising, as he was on pace to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards, but he suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 8.The Texans did not re-sign Diggs, and they tried to replace him by acquiring Christian Kirk from the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2025 offseason. However, Kirk had a career-low 239 receiving yards in his lone season in Houston. And in late August, Houston acquired wide receiver Kayshon Boutte from the New England Patriots for safety Jaylen Reed and a seventh-round pick in an attempt to find help after losing wide receiver Jayden Higgins, who tore an ACL during joint practices with the Las Vegas Raiders.Higgins was coming off an up-and-down rookie season but was beginning to flash during camp and was projected to be the No. 2 wideout alongside Collins. Boutte is fifth on the team in receiving yards (153) with zero touchdowns despite being second in routes run (130) through five games.Besides drafting Higgins with their first pick in 2025 (a second-rounder), the Texans have used third-round picks on Tank Dell (2023) and Jaylin Noel (2025) and sixth-rounders on Xavier Hutchinson (2023) and Lewis Bond (2026).Now, they've added Harrison, who was the No. 4 pick in the 2024 draft, with a smiling Ryans announcing the trade moments after the Texans got their first win of the season Sunday."We're excited to add Marvin Harrison Jr. to our team," Ryans said Monday. "He's another really great playmaker. He's crushed a lot of college records. Got multiple thousand-yard receiving seasons in college. All-American, always been a top receiver when he's been on the field. He has good rapport with [Stroud] from their time at Ohio State. We're excited to get him in, add another great player to our group."Harrison hasn't lived up to the bullish draft hype after his decorated college career. He has had 1,578 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in 33 NFL games.Stroud, teammates with Harrison in 2021 and 2022, was a driving force behind the move, so Houston is hoping reuniting the pair can help rejuvenate Harrison's career."He's probably the hardest worker I've ever been around in my life," Stroud said. "And then just who he is off the field. He's a great dude, quiet guy, but definitely, you feel his presence. I'm just excited to get him in here, to get him learning, and get him around other guys. And I think it's perfect for him."Though Ryans said the Texans haven't necessarily targeted pass catchers, the move marks the fifth time they've traded for a wide receiver since 2023, the most of any team during that stretch, according to ESPN Research."It's a look at it from our perspective of, 'Can you improve the team?'" Ryans said. "Each year, whatever that looks like, wherever we are, each year is different."The years might be different, but Collins has been the constant. He has gone over the 1,000-yard-receiving mark in each year of Ryans' tenure. As far as the No. 2 wide receiver, Dell's 709 yards in 2023 still stands as the next-best season they've had.So, can Harrison eventually be the WR2 they've been seeking? Only time will tell.
