His move comes one day after Royal's latest visit with the Gators during the program's 38-19 loss to South Carolina on Saturday and follows months of intense flip interest from multiple SEC programs, including LSU, Ole Miss and Tennessee.Upon his decision, Royal is expected to cancel previously scheduled visits to Texas and LSU and plans to fully shut down his recruiting process, per multiple sources close to the recruitment.Royal's flip marks a seismic recruiting victory for first-year Florida coach Jon Sumrall, who led the Gators to a 4-0 start before back-to-back losses to Missouri and South Carolina.Operating just seven miles from Royal and New Orleans' Brother High School, Sumrall initially offered Royal as the head coach of Tulane in March 2025. Sumrall resumed his pursuit of Royal following his arrival to Florida late last year, and the Gators landed one of Royal's three official visits alongside LSU and Texas this spring. The longstanding relationship between Royal and Sumrall's staff was ultimately critical to finally swaying Royal's pledge to Florida."I know [Sumrall] is a winner," Royal told ESPN this summer. "He won at Tulane and took them to the College Football Playoff. I know what he's all about. He's the type of coach I want to play for."Royal, Louisiana's No. 2 recruit, now stands as one of the crown jewel in Sumrall's debut recruiting class with the Gators, joining five-star offensive tackle Maxwell Hiller (No. 7 overall) and in-state quarterback Davin Davidson, ESPN's No. 6 pocket passer.Florida began Saturday with 25 prospects committed to the No. 8 recruiting class in ESPN's latest class rankings for the 2027 cycle. If Royal ultimately signs with Florida in December, he'll represent the program's highest-ranked wide receiver addition since Percy Harvin in the 2006 class.A multi-sport athlete at Brother Martin, Royal projects as a dynamic playmaker at the college level. He accounted for 2,095 all-purpose yards and 29 total touchdowns in his junior season last fall. In May, Royal broke a 46-year-old Louisiana state record and secured a state championship after posting a 100-meter dash time of 10.17 seconds.Royal initially committed to the Longhorns last November, landing as the first member of the program's' 2027 class. Anchored by a close relationship with Texas wide receivers coach Chris Jackson, he returned to campus multiple times this year and held his commitment to the program this summer amid substantial outside flip interest. His move delivers a substantial blow to Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian's latest class, which previously ranked No. 4 nationally. The move also adds another layer to Florida's Week 7 trip to Texas after the top-ranked Longhorns (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season in an upset defeat to Oklahoma on Saturday. The Gators (4-2) visit Darrell K Royal Stadium at 12 PM ET Saturday on ABC.
