EmailPrintEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants wide receiver Braxton Berrios will need surgery on his injured foot and will miss the remainder of the season, he announced Tuesday on Instagram.Berrios revealed the news on his 31st birthday and said, "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't miserable right now." This is his third consecutive season that has ended early because of injury.Berrios was the Giants' primary kickoff and punt returner, in addition to being the fourth wide receiver. He had yet to catch a pass in 23 offensive snaps and was averaging 2.5 yards per punt return.Charlie Jones, who along with Berrios was signed to the active roster last week, will step into the return role. Jones had two punt returns for 29 yards and averaged 23 yards per kickoff return Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals after Berrios was injured returning a punt late in the first half.Coach John Harbaugh said Monday that the Giants planned to replace Berrios primarily from within. The Giants have wide receivers Dalen Cambre and Jalin Hyatt on the practice squad. They also are signing former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Dontae Fleming to the practice squad, per source."I think our first look would be internally, yes," Harbaugh said. "We've got guys that have been here practicing who are in the system, know what they're doing or are preparing for this opportunity. Kind of like we did with [outside linebacker] Trace [Ford], too. So, that would be our first look. I'm sure we'll turn over every stone, too. But sometimes the best stones are right under your feet. So, that would probably be our move, I would think."The Giants recently released wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to make room on the active roster for Berrios and Jones. It seems unlikely that Beckham would return.Berrios is in his eighth professional season with the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and Giants. He has 140 career catches for 1,360 yards and six touchdowns as a receiver.Berrios also has a kickoff return for a touchdown on his rsum.
