The 2-1 Lions are coming off a 31-24 win over the New York Jets, while the Panthers fell to 1-2 after a 21-18 loss to the Cleveland Browns.Detroit has balance, with the ability to attack Carolina on the ground and through the air, forcing a depleted defense to choose where to commit help. Jahmyr Gibbs threatens the edges and makes defenders miss, while Amon-Ra St. Brown gives Jared Goff a reliable answer underneath. With cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson sidelined, Carolina has fewer options for covering Detroit's receivers without sacrificing support against the run.The Panthers do have a counter: they disguise their safety looks after the snap and defend play action well, potentially complicating Goff's reads when he turns his back to the defense. Carolina's offense faces a different problem. Bryce Young has shown he can beat man coverage, but protection breakdowns undermine those opportunities. Detroit's pressure can exploit an injured offensive line.If Young gets time, however, the Lions' vulnerable secondary offers openings for Tetairoa McMillan and Darren Waller, particularly with the Panthers likely leaning on quick throws to avoid sacks.Betting outlookI prefer Detroit -3.5 because Carolina's injuries make it difficult to see the Panthers consistently trading scores. Detroit has scored 31 points in every game, its offense still producing despite inconsistencies. Carolina could produce offensively and still fall short of covering if its depleted defense can't get enough stops.Over 50.5 is a tougher commitment. Even if Detroit reaches its average again, Carolina needs at least 20 to get us there. Waller offers a promising outlet at tight end against a Lions defense that has allowed six touchdowns to the position, but Young's protection (or lack of) makes sustained scoring less dependable.Sacks could kill possessions before that matchup advantage translates into points. The Panthers' aggressive passing approach keeps the over viable, especially if they spend the second half chasing the Lions. But that comeback production is something I'm less willing to count on.The spread and total don't have a clear edge on either side.Notable player props, betsNote: Odds by DraftKings and subject to change.Jahmyr Gibbs 140+ rushing and receiving yards (-112)Gibbs' workload travels across game scripts. Detroit can feed him carries while leading or find him through the air if Carolina stays close. The Panthers have allowed a league-worst 580 rushing yards on 5.7 yards per carry. That gives Gibbs room to produce on the ground, while his seven targets per game gives this wager another path beyond rushing production. We're backing a heavy workload against a defense struggling to stop the run.Darren Waller Anytime TD +260Liz Loza: Waller has emerged as a legitimate part of the Panthers' offense. Not only has his snap share increased each week (34% to 43% to 49%), but his eight targets led the team last Sunday. He's also been active in the red area, recording two end zone looks and hauling in two touchdowns over three contests. He has a good shot at hitting pay dirt again in Week 4 versus the Lions, as six different tight ends have recorded a TD when facing Detroit.
