I want to rewind for just a second ... stay with me.The 2025 season was defined by defense: Indiana won with the nation's best defense, Texas Tech built its success the same way, and Saturdays often seemed like a test of which team could survive the (literal) pressure.Three weeks into the 2026 season, quarterbacks are driving the conversation, scoring is creating highlights, and offenses such as Ole Miss, USC and Miami are shaping how we view the national picture.The numbers add a warning: Most ranked teams still grade better defensively than offensively. So while the current season is being marketed through offense, defense quietly holds the contenders together.Why mention that? Because it creates an important split in the futures market. Offense can produce a Heisman winner, but a team still needs a dependable defense to win the national championship.Odds by DraftKings and subject to change.Heisman Market WatchTrinidad Chambliss, QB, Ole Miss: +290Last week's odds: 13-1We have a new Heisman favorite, and, wow, is he fun to watch. The hype and thrill is real: Chambliss went from 13-1 to +290 because Week 3 gave voters (and the market) a signature performance against No. 7 LSU. Chambliss threw for 363 yards and led Ole Miss to a win by staying in complete control of the game and looking every bit comfortable on a big stage. The huge price drop is a reflection of his production through three weeks, his talent and now his rsum all supporting one another.I mentioned Chambliss before the season and again after Week 1 because his game had the most repeatable skills of the longer-priced candidates. It was a wager on who he was last season (an electrifying playmaker) and who he still could become (a potential No. 1 draft pick). After beating both Louisville and LSU, everyone can finally see it, too.So what do you do now? If you have +1300, enjoy the ticket. There's no need to add +290. If you missed that number, I wouldn't chase the move. At his current price, you'd now be betting that he finishes the job with most of the season remaining. There's still injury risk and enough time left in the season for another candidate to create a defining moment.Ole Miss RB Kewan Lacy missing time could potentially increase Chambliss' passing volume, but that's already priced in. I still love Chambliss. I just loved him more before the market caught up.Kamario Taylor, QB, Mississippi State: +1150Last week's odds: 25-1Taylor definitely has my attention. He's so easy to root for and increasingly difficult to ignore. He's charismatic and great in an interview -- all of which matters for an award built partly around visibility and narrative. His personality works in conjunction with his Heisman odds because he's also producing. Through three games, Taylor has 832 passing yards, 178 rushing yards and 12 total touchdowns while leading Mississippi State to a 3-0 start, cracking the top 25 for the first time since 2022.That explains the big move from 25-1 to +1150. People are buying the combination of production, personality and potential. Let's gently tap the brakes: His resume still doesn't compare to Chambliss. Ole Miss has beaten two ranked teams, and the Bulldogs beat UL Monroe, Minnesota and South Carolina.His production is real, but the conditions producing it have been unusually comfortable. Taylor has faced pressure on only 17% of his dropbacks, the lowest rate in the SEC. That will not continue against Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma and Texas all in the weeks ahead.The schedule will give him opportunities to build a Heisman rsum. It could also expose the weakest part of his current profile. As it stands, Chambliss already has the proof; Taylor still represents the possibility.National championship market watchOle Miss Rebels: +1500Last week's odds: +2700The Rebels were my preseason longshot at 30-1. After an exciting win over LSU, where do I stand with the Rebels now?Ole Miss is more credible as a championship contender but less attractive as a championship bet. The move to 15-1 is justified because the LSU win confirmed that Chambliss' abilities were legitimate, the most important part of the preseason case. We watched him elevate his team even when the opponent improved. That kind of win carries real weight in playoff seeding.What hasn't been answered is whether Ole Miss can win several of those games. The offense is championship capable, no doubt. It's the defense that concerns me, as it currently grades as the second worst in the SEC, with major concerns in tackling and coverage.At 30-1, we were betting that Ole Miss could become this team. At 15-1, the market is charging for the LSU breakthrough while the defensive concerns remain with a tough schedule still on tap.I'd refrain from adding Ole Miss at 15-1. If you missed the preseason number, back the Rebels selectively when they're underdogs.The remaining schedule creates opportunities against Florida, Texas and Georgia. with Mississippi State potentially joining that list by the Egg Bowl. Taking 15-1 requires Chambliss to carry a flawed defense through the season and several playoff games. I'd rather take attractive plus-money one game at a time than pay the current futures price for everything to go right.Prediction: Nothing to add right nowBetting is as much about saying no as it is saying yes. My prediction is a pass. I'm not buying Ole Miss at 15-1 to win the national championship, and I'm not adding Taylor at +1150 for the Heisman.The betting industry tells us to buy this number before it disappears, but sometimes the right move is to slow down. We already have a strong portfolio with Ole Miss at 30-1 and Chambliss at 13-1 along with Jeremiah Smith.Conference play begins, schedules get tougher and separation starts to develop. Let's keep our numbers and make the market prove something more.
