Kyle Shanahan made a winning start to his 10th season in charge of the San Francisco 49ers, and he can look forward to many more campaigns as their head coach after a piece of offseason business that only came to light on Friday. Shanahan, per Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix, signed a contract extension with the 49ers this offseason.The 46-year-old was said to previously be contracted to the 49ers through the 2027 season. The length of his new deal has not been reported, but the extension will see San Francisco keep hold of a coach who has established himself as one of the best and most influential in the NFL for the long term.Shanahan recorded his 92nd overall win (83 regular season, 9 postseason) as 49ers head coach this week as San Francisco crushed the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in their Week 1 clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.The Niners have been to the playoffs in five of Shanahans previous nine seasons in charge. Last seasons Divisional Round loss to the Seattle Seahawks marked the first time in any of the 49ers postseason campaigns under Shanahan that they have failed to at least reach the NFC Championship Game.Shanahan has led the 49ers to two Super Bowl appearances in the 2019 and 2023 seasons, though they each ended in heartbreaking defeats to the Kansas City Chiefs.
