When John Cena announced his farewell tour in the summer of 2024, fans quickly began to voice which opponents they'd like to see the 17-time World Champion face for the last time, ranging from old rivals to newer stars. Despite Cena renewing his rivalries with the likes of AJ Styles and CM Punk along with wrestling talent like Dominik Mysterio for the first time, one name that many believed would return to WWE for his retirement tour was AEW's Adam Copeland, formerly known as Edge.Knowing he was one of Cena's greatest rivals during the 2000s, Copeland would've entertained the idea of coming back to WWE for one night only. However, Copeland recently stated on "The Ariel Helwani Show" that WWE would've not considered his return, even if AEW President Tony Khan allowed him to wrestle Cena."Well, here's what I realized. They could link to each other. One place doesn't want it to," he said. "He [Tony Khan] knows what it would have meant to a very large segment of the wrestling fan ...I can see it from all sides. I really can.But John knew I was there in spirit ...we kind of made our bones on each other andwe're both aware of that fact. Like both of our careers would have been great. But I think thatangle, that story, those two opponents kind of propelled us to a different place ...having been there long enough and kind of knowing how the mindset is there, I realized, it ain't going to happen. If it were up to me and John, sure."Despite still being an active star on AEW's roster, Copeland is starting to think of life after wrestling himself, stating that he'd like to retire by the age of 54, which would be in October of next year.If you use any of the quotes in this article, please credit "The Ariel Helwani Show" with a h/t to Wrestling Inc. for the transcription.
