Thea Hail may be a fighting champion. Sometimes that trait can spell a champions downfall.
WWE NXTs New Years Evil on January 6 didnt go as planned when one of the nights advertised title matches was abruptly called off. Thea Hail was scheduled to defend the NXT Womens North American Championship against Blake Monroe, with Jordynne Grace at ringside, but the match never officially started.
As Hail made her way out, Monroe launched a surprise attack, slamming the champion into the ring steps and then driving her head into the barricade, which broke on impact. Officials immediately rushed to the scene and stopped the match before entrances were even completed, leaving Hail still champion but clearly shaken.
Blake Monroe was escorted out of the arena and later banned from the building by NXT General Manager Ava. Later on, Thea Hail agreed to have the match anyway.
Thea Hail came out, still selling her injuries from the attack prior in the night. Since Blake Monroe was kicked out of the building, they held an open challenge. Thea Hail cried as she cut a promo in the middle of the ring while stating that she promised a title shot to someone. She said whoever gets to the ring first will get the championship. At that point, the entire womens roster started rushing the ring.
Tatum Paxley ran down with a chainsaw, but Izzi Dame was able to make it into the ring first. The match started fast with Izzi beating Thea around the ring. Previously in the night, Tatum beat Izzi in a singles match, but Dame was the one who jumped in to get the title match.
Izzi Dame slammed Thea Hail down, but she couldnt secure a pinfall before they cut to commercial break. By the time we got back, Izzi Dame was still beating Thea Hail down. Thea was able to return fire, but she couldnt get to her feet in quick fashion. Everything Thea did was followed by selling her previous injuries.
Although Izzi Dame put Thea Hail through a ton of punishment, she wasnt able to close out the match. Finally, Thea went for a dive on the outside, but Izzi caught her and slammed the champion into the announce table. Izzi and Thea battled on the top rope after that, and then Izzi nailed a Dame Over off the top for the win to become the new Womens North American Champion.
