Frances Tiafoe reveals that coaches David Witt and Jordi Arconada weren't the only team members he fired after the 2025 season, and explains he made such a radical decision because he is seeking "a fresh start."
After losing to Jan-Lennard Struff in the US Open third round, Tiafoe also lost both of his Davis Cup singles matches, as well as lost his openers in Tokyo and the Shanghai Masters. Amid a five-match losing run, the 27-year-old decided to call it a season prematurely. Shortly after, it was announced that he had stopped working with Witt and Arconada.
Witt, who enjoyed a very successful five-year partnership with Jessica Pegula and also briefly coached Maria Sakkari, joined Tiafoe's team in the summer of 2024. Arconada worked with the American for five years.
Tiafoe's stint with Witt started promisingly after the former world No. 10 reached the 2024 US Open semifinal. While the American also had some notable results in the first part of 2025 - he finished as runner-up in Houston and made the French Open quarterfinal - it was still an inconsistent year on his side as he concluded the season with a 26-23 record and ranked at No. 30 in the world.
Tiafoe: I got rid of more than just two guys... I wanted to get a fresh start but also a little uncomfortable and see what happens
I mean, I got rid of more than just two guys. I just wanted a fresh start. We have been doing the same thing for a very long time. Ill be 28 at the top of the year, and I kind of just want to do something different. I want to get a little bit uncomfortable and just see what happens. Why not? I dont think there is anything bad that can come out of that. As far as what is going forward, I guess you guys will have to wait and see. Wait and see who I decide to bring with me and go on this crazy journey that we call life," the 27-year-old explained.
Tiafoe has won three ATP titles and reached two Grand Slam semifinals so far in his career. The American achieved a career-high ranking of No. 10 in June 2023.
