Fabio Fognini's long career in professional tennis came to an end at the Wimbledon Championships this year, after he put in a masterful performance against Carlos Alcaraz in the first round. The Italian veteran played one of the best matches of his entire career in the most prestigious tournament in the world, putting the two-time defending champion in serious trouble who prevailed only in the fifth set after an electrifying battle.
The former world No.9 made the decision to say goodbye to the ATP tour after that match, because his body had sent him clear signals in the previous months and he knew that this was the best possible way to say goodbye to a sport that gave him everything.
Fognini talks about Sinner
Fabio has often been criticized for his behavior on the tennis court and accused of wasting his talent, but the truth is that he had to play in a particularly tough era (dominated by the 'Fab Four) and has always been genuine and spontaneous avoiding compromises.

For example, Fognini has never hidden that he was very upset when he was not called up for the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga in 2023. He believed he deserved that call-up from Filippo Volandri, which would have allowed him to lift a trophy for which he has always given his best.
Interviewed by well-known Italian journalist Francesca Fagnani, the former Top 10 answered the question of whether he would like to be like his compatriot Jannik Sinner: "He is at the top of the ATP ranking, so I would sign immediately to be like Jannik. At the same time, I think he would like to live the way I live. I am spontaneous, lively, cheerful and I say everything I think. He has a very different character from mine."
Fognini and Sinner met immediately after the final of the 2025 Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, in which Jannik defeated his huge rival Carlitos Alcaraz at the end of a thrilling battle. Fabio entered the locker room and congratulated the world number 2.
