Unlike what he had done in the last two years, Jannik Sinner preferred to skip the 2025 edition of the Davis Cup Finals which took place in Bologna last week. The world number 2 had already made this decision some time ago having other priorities, but when he announced that he would not be present to defend the title together with his teammates there was a lot of controversy in his country.

The 24-year-old from Sesto Pusteria ended his amazing season by winning the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin for the second year in a row, a truly prestigious achievement that also served to extend his unbeaten streak in indoor conditions (where he has not lost for exactly two years).

Sinner supported his teammates

Thanks to an amazing last part of 2025 in which he also lifted the trophy in Beijing, Vienna and the Paris Masters 1000 the Italian star moved to just 550 points behind world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz (beaten in the final at the ATP Finals). The four-time Grand Slam champion who has won six titles this year despite a three-month break between February and May is indulging in some relaxation during this time and has just left for a holiday in the Maldives, before starting training in Dubai in December.

Interviewed in the latest episode of 'Un Giorno da Pecora' on Rai Radio 1, the Italian Davis Cup captain Filippo Volandri confessed that Jannik was very close to the team during the 'Final 8' (won by Italy beating Spain in the final): "He congratulated us on the victory in the common chat and wrote to me personally every day, giving me some advice and telling me to believe in the talent of the players available."

The world No.2 will start the new season by playing an exhibition match with his huge rival Alcaraz in Seoul on January 10, 2026, about a week before the official start of the Australian Open in Melbourne (where the Italian star won in 2024 and 2025).
