Stefanos Tsitsipas' lawyer Thanasis Papathanasiou has clarified the situation regarding the reports about the Greek tennis star driving well above the speeding limit and being heavily sanctioned, as the car was driven by "a third person" and the matter has been resolved.

This week, a Greek publication reported that Tsitsipas was caught driving 210km/h in a 120km/h zone on Attiki Odos. The same publication claimed that the former world No. 3 was fined 2000 euros and also set to lose his driver's license for a year.

On Friday, a Greek tennis publication reached out to Tsitsipas' lawyer, who explained that the 13-time ATP champion wasn't driving the car, but that it was someone else. Also, it was revealed in the same report that the incident didn't happen recently, but in late September.

"Regarding the incident that was made public, the car was being driven by a third person. The issue of the fine and the surrender of the license have all been handled," lawyer Papathanasiou told tennisnews.gr.

Tsitsipas shut down his season in mid-October

After losing in the US Open second round, Tsitsipas missed the entire Asian swing due to a back injury, but competed at the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh. The former world No. 3 didn't impress, easily losing 2-6 3-6 to Jannik Sinner in his Riyadh opener.

Afterward, the Greek - who went just 22-18 in 2025 and finished outside the top-30 - explained what he needed to address to ensure he at least has a chance of returning to his old level in 2026.

I need a healthy body to give myself more chances to maybe rebound and be back in the top five. If Im not going to be healthy, its going to be a very difficult task for me to be at the top of my game again. This is the truth. This is the reality. I think everyone agrees with me. Theres not a single person who disagrees, and that has been the biggest concern in the last couple of months," world No. 34 Tsitsipas stated in Riyadh.
