Carlos Alcaraz has concluded his 2025 season on Monday night in Bologna! World no. 1 made a tough decision and withdrew from the upcoming Davis Cup Finals following a physical setback experienced at the ATP Finals.

The Spaniard played well in Turin last week and reached his first ATP Finals title match. He fought well despite physical problems and wasted his chances in a 7-6 7-5 defeat to Jannik Sinner.

Carlos and his team arrived in Bologna on Monday, with the world's best player still seeking options to embrace the Davis Cup run. However, an MRI test revealed a muscle edema in his right hamstring.

Not risking anything after a grueling season and 80 matches, Alcaraz decided to withdraw from the Davis Cup Finals. Jaume Munar and Pablo Carreno Busta will lead Spain in singles, while Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez form the doubles pair.

Carlos felt problems with his right leg during the round-robin stage in Turin, despite a perfect 3-0 record. Things did not improve in the semi-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime, although the Spaniard secured another comfortable victory.

As was expected, the intensity of the title clash against Sinner made the discomfort reach its peak. Alcaraz required a medical timeout in the closing stages of the opening set and played the second with his right thigh heavily taped.

He battled for over two hours and missed chances in both sets against the finest indoor player. However, the discomfort was impossible to ignore. Upon arriving in Bologna, Carlos went straight from the van to the clinic.

Doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro accompanied him, and an MRI test showed no rupture but significant overload and edema. The condition carries a high risk of turning into a full tear if he continued competing.

Thus, Alcaraz was forced to withdraw from the Davis Cup and end his career-best season, having to think about next season and especially the Australian Open that starts in two months.

The 22-year-old underwent treatment in hotel and wished for improvements ahead of stepping onto the court on Wednesday. However, he had to change hisplan and prioritize health.
