Maya Joint saved a match point to propel Australia over Brazil and secure her nation a place in next year's Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers.
After Australia defeated Portugal in the opening tie of Group E in Hobart, they also won the opening match of their tie against Brazil. So when 32nd-ranked Joint took to the court against world No. 193 Laura Pigossi, the reigning Eastbourne champion had a chance to seal the deal and she managed to do so after earning a hard-fought 2-6 7-5 6-1 win over the world No. 193.
While the home favorite entered the match as the big favorite, the rising star struggled heavily early on and lost her serve twice in the first set before also falling 3-5 down in the second set.
With Pigossi serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set and having a match point, that's when Joint's major comeback started - the Australian saved the match point and stunningly won eight games in a row to open a 2-6 7-5 5-0 win before serving out for the match in the seventh game of the third set.
Joint, Kim Birrell lead Australia to victory over Brazil
Before Joint entered the court, Birrell took on 15-year-old Nauhany Vitoria Leme da Silva.
And while world No. 95 Birrell probably had it harder than expected against the teenager, she still managed to complete a 6-4 3-6 6-1 win.
Two days earlier against Portugal, Joint defeated Francisca Jorge, while Birrell beat Matilde Jorge.
