The 21-year-old golfer, who last year played on the Challenge Tour, the second tier of golf in this part of the Atlantic, has 36 holes ahead of him in Dubai, at the DP World Tour Final, to realize his first major dream: playing on the PGA Tour next season. To do so, he needs to finish in the top three of the DP World Championship, where he is currently eleventh, two strokes shy of the third place he would need to secure outright. "I'd swim to America if necessary," he said in Madrid after the Spanish Open.

Ayora was on fire. He carded the fourth-best round on Friday with a 67, behind the 65 of the blazing leader, Nicolai Hojgaard, and the 66s of Lukas Aberg and Haotong Li. He played orthodox golf: birdies on three par 5s; Two more par 4s, on the 5th and 12th. On the downside, he missed the 15th hole, another par 4 under 400 meters, after a great tee shot. (Results)
But overall he was tremendous. Solid. He earned the right to play a great match on Saturday alongside Tyrrell Hatton after a second round where the Bethpage champions, Justin Rose (67), Rory McIlroy (69), and Shane Lowr (67), all pushed hard. Lowr, who is now nine strokes ahead of Marco Penge, took another step toward winning his seventh Order of Merit.

"I had to fight a little harder than yesterday," McIlroy said. "The conditions were also a bit tougher. If you compare the scores to today, you'll see it's a bit more complicated. I missed a couple of fairways and ran into some really bad lies, some of the worst I've seen this week." He carded three bogeys and six birdies.
