This year's Ryder Cup brought a lot of tension, mainly due to the behavior of American fans who were negatively directed towards European golfers from day one. Things went so far that insults became a daily occurrence, and some did not hesitate to insult even the wives of players like Rory McIlroy.
Of course, such gestures did not cause enthusiasm among the leading figures of the American golf scene, such as the CEO of the PGA, Derek Sprague.
It is especially interesting to note that Derek sent a long email in which he apologized to the Northern Irish golfer for the behavior of the home fans. The insults that Rory suffered would be something few would be able to endure, but his experience was once again decisive.
Although he could sometimes have a reaction, Rory ultimately managed to make the most of himself and help the Europeans celebrate.
McIlroy revealed that his wife worked with Derek at the PGA of America before, further emphasizing that Sprague was extremely kind and considerate.
"Erica worked with Derek at the PGA of America back in the day, so we know Derek and his wife pretty well," he said, as quoted by Independent.
"I take it as a compliment that they targeted me, but then at the same time, it was a tough week. That made us better as a team. It galvanised us and it really put our arms around each other.
I think back to the start in January of 2025 when I was last here and everything thats happened since. Honestly, in my wildest dreams, I didnt know. I mean, I knew a year like this was possible, but it has just been an amazing 10 months."
Future challenges
The Northern Irish golfer appreciates his gesture, and ultimately emphasizes that the behavior of the American fans was an additional motivation not only for him but also for the entire team.
The 36-year-old is now focused on future challenges, and it will be especially interesting to see the performances of the Europeans on home soil in two years.
