Jannik Sinner lived up to all odds by reaching the final at the Vienna ATP 500 and will try to lift his second trophy in the Austrian capital after his success in 2023. The world number 2 has not lost a single set so far and has never given the real feeling of being in trouble, with the exception of the second set of the Italian derby against his compatriot Flavio Cobolli, who put in an excellent performance creating some problems for the four-time Grand Slam champion.
The 24-year-old from Sesto Pusteria suffered two breaks against Australian ace Alex de Minaur in the semifinals, but claimed his twelfth victory over him in as many clashes on the professional tour. The former world No. 1 has once again shown that he is almost unstoppable in indoor conditions and will also start as a favorite against Alexander Zverev today, although the German star is ahead 4-3 in the h2h balance. However, Jannik prevailed in the last two clashes against Sascha in Cincinnati in 2024 and at the Australian Open earlier this year, respectively.
Sinner collects records
Sinner wants to win his fourth title this season, before focusing his attention on the Paris Masters 1000 (scheduled in the new venue next week) and especially on the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin (in which he will try to defend the title).
Thanks to the final reached in Vienna this week, the Italian champion recorded another truly impressive stat. He has reached at least the last act in 80% of the tournaments played this year, an extraordinary feat that had only been achieved by Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in the two-year period 2015-2016 before him.
"I've had to use some energy so far, but I've always tried to play in the best possible way and I'm happy to have reached the final," said the number 1 seed in the press conference. "I hope to be ready for the match scheduled for Sunday and I am convinced that it will be a truly spectacular final" - added the 24-year-old from Sesto Pusteria.
