Sam Querrey fears it might take up to two years for Holger Rune to physically and mentally overcome his Achilles injury.

A week ago, Rune suffered one of the most serious injuries seen on the ATP Tour this year. After hobbling to his bench and calling for a physiotherapist, the Danish tennis star started to cry while telling the physio that he heard something "pop" in his Achilles tendon. As expected, it turned out to be a very serious injury as the 22-year-old's Achilles tendon got fully broken on the proximal part and he required surgery.

At the moment, the only sure thing is that Rune will be out for an extended period and miss at least a good portion of the first part of the 2026 season.

Querrey, who retired from pro tennis in 2022 and switched to pro pickleball, also injured his Achilles in early 2024.

Querrey: It might take Rune two years before he mentally overcomes his injury

"I think about it a little bit, but I did rehab on mine. I probably did 70% of what Holger will do, you know? I was retired. I wasn't like super, super diligent with the rehab and getting back as fast as I could, 'cause what am I going to get back to, record a podcast with you guys? It's not like I was getting back out there. So, I hope he gets to that spot. But like you said, Jack, even though he's back in a year, it might take him two years before mentally he's like, 'Okay, I have zero hesitation to push off in any direction.' But yeah, terrible," Querrey said on the Nothing Major Show.

Querrey made a valid point as it is not a secret that players find such injuries as traumatic, and when they return, they fear about picking up the same injury again.
