Rey Mysterio is inching closer to a WWE comeback and his next move could tie directly into WWEs newly acquired AAA brand.
According to PWInsider Elite, the WWE Hall of Famer is expected at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando this week as part of his recovery process. Mysterio has been sidelined since April 2025 with a torn groin and a ruptured eardrum, injuries that required surgery and months of rehab. His presence at the PC strongly suggests hes nearing medical clearance and could return to WWE television soon.
Mysterios return couldnt be timed better. WWE has major plans in development for the legendary luchador, particularly in connection with its acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. WrestleVotes Radio previously reported that WWE wants Mysterio in a major role for AAA-branded programming moving forward.
One idea currently being discussed is another AAA-branded streaming event before the end of the year, potentially landing on Survivor Series weekend in San Diego Mysterios hometown. While nothing is confirmed, speculation around a potential AAA Mega Championship storyline has gained traction. Whether or not Mysterio competes for the title or is involved in another capacity remains to be seen.
Whats clear is that WWE sees Mysterio as a key figure in launching its AAA plans. Given his history with the brand where he helped pioneer the lucha libre style in the early 90s it makes perfect sense.
Reys comeback could usher in a new era for both him and AAA under the WWE umbrella, and fans are waiting to see if it will happen under the San Diego spotlight.
