Iga Swiatek hopes to fix a couple of things in the next couple of days and bounce back in Wuhan, but admits she is unsure how everything will go simply because this will be her first time competing at the Chinese WTA 1000 tournament.
Last year, the Polish tennis star missed the entire Asian swing. Later, it was revealed that the six-time Grand Slam champion served a silent doping ban and that's why she was unable to compete during this part of the season.
However, this year, nothing prevented Swiatek from competing in Asia and she has already appeared in two tournaments - she won the WTA 500 tournament in Seoul before exiting the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing on Wednesday following a 4-6 6-4 0-6 loss to Navarro. During the Navarro loss, the top-seeded Pole never looked like herself and stunningly finished with 70 unforced errors.
Swiatek: I'll try to improve some things on the court... But I have no idea what's Wuhan like
Honestly, there are some specific things I think I can improve on court, so I'll try to do that in the next few days. I've never been to Wuhan, so I have no idea what the place or the courts are like, but it will be nice to see a new place. It's good that the tournament is shorter, so it doesn't matter as much whether you win or lose; you can just keep going and do your job, that's all. I'll do my best, try to work on these things on court, and hopefully be ready for the first match," the Pole said.
After a couple of years without any Asian tournaments due to the pandemic, the Asian swing returned in 2023. That year, Swiatek played in Beijing but not in Wuhan.
It remains to be seen how will Swiatek feel in Wuhan and if she can have an impressive debut.
