Elina Svitolina reacted to Gael Monfils' retirement announcement with a heartfelt message as the Ukrainian tennis star told her husband she "cannot wait" to be a part of the new chapter of his life.
On Wednesday, Monfils took to Instagram to share some important news as the 13-time ATP champion plans to retire from pro tennis next year. Since the 39-year-old Frenchman started his career in 2004 and he is set to play one more year, that means that he will retire with 22 years of pro tennis on his back.
"I held a racket in my hands for the first time at two and a half, and began playing professionally at 18. Now, after celebrating my 39th birthday just a month ago, I'd like to share that the year ahead will be my last as a professional tennis player. The opportunity to turn my passion into a profession is a privilege I have cherished during every match and moment of my 21-year career. Though this game means the world to me, I am tremendously at peace with my decision to retire at the end of the 2026 season," Monfils wrote in his message.

Under the Frenchman's post, his wife commented: "Cant wait to begin this new chapter with you. We love you."
Svitolina and Monfils' love story started in 2019, when they officially became a couple. In the spring of 2021, they took their love relationship to a new level after announcing their engagement. In 2021 July, they tied the knot. The following year, their first baby, daughter Skai, was born.
In some of his interviews that came in recent years, Monfils credited Svitolina for helping him stay in pro tennis as long as he has.
