Daniil Medvedev will not be fined for the "lack of effort" in the Beijing semi-final against Learnen Tien. The Russian received a controversial "best effort" code violation from the chair umpire Adel Nour.

However, the ATP confirmed that the code violation, issues while Medvedev was visibly struggling with cramps in the early stages of the deciding set, was a mistake.

Daniil, who battled severe physical issues, remained motionless on one serve while trying to manage the pain and continue the duel. However, Nour interpreted the moment as a lack of effort from the former world no. 1.

He issues a "best effort" warning - a rare and radical call than can carry a fine up to $40,000 at ATP 500 events! Visibly stunned, Medvedev called for the tournament supervisor.

He questioned the decision and defended his commitment despite the condition and his physical shape during a grueling battle. ATP Officiated made a detailed review and concluded that the warning was given in error.

They clarified that the rule is meant to address deliberate match-tanking, which was certainly not the case in Daniil's acting. The decision means the Russian will face no financial penalty, with the governing body getting in touch with a player and his team shortly after he ended his semi-final run.

The 2021 US Open winner had been under scrutiny following prior fines for on-court behavior, especially in Melbourne and New York. This time, the ATP sided firmly in his favor, making the right decision.

The incident reignited discussion about the balance between enforcing professionalism and understanding physical limits. Daniil displayed evident effort to extend the match in the Chinese capital despite barely standing on his legs.

The ATP's reversal recognized his effort, which is most important. Ironically, the Russian could have avoided all the drama! He led Tien 7-5, 5-3 and served for the win. However, the young gun turned the tables in the closing stages of the second set with a double break.

Medvedev had nothing more left in the tank. He barely claimed a couple of points in the opening four games of the final set before retiring.
