Despite promising to become more professional and changing several things in his team, Holger Rune's season continues to be characterized by too many ups and downs. The young Danish star does not have the consistency that should be expected from a talent of his caliber and time passes, making the gap that separates him from Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner increasingly evident.

Most experts and insiders expected that he would have a very different first part of his career when he won the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000 in 2022, a very premature triumph that had deluded everyone. His rise was interrupted too soon and several wrong choices have moved him away from the top positions of the ATP rankings, although the former Top 5 has shown flashes of his enormous potential on some occasions.

Rune lifted the trophy at Barcelona's ATP 500 this year, beating current world No.1 Carlitos Alcaraz in the final, as well as reaching the final at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 during the spring (lost to ATP ace Jack Draper after a strong run).

Rune lost again

The world number 11 suffered a disappointing loss against American ace Jenson Brooksby in Tokyo today, showing his usual weaknesses and missing yet another chance to turn his season around.

In the latest edition of the show 'Sans Filet', top analyst Benoit Maylin shared some interesting thoughts on Rune: "Holger is definitely a very interesting player and it's not easy to understand what's going on in his mind at this stage of his career. He did not win a Masters 1000 and entered the Top 5 of the ATP ranking by chance, it is clear to everyone that he has an extraordinary talent.

His mental toughness is in question, although he is only 22 years old. He doesn't seem to have the same approach as Alcaraz and Sinner, he has to find his way again and has disappointed expectations so far. He has to work hard and learn to find solutions on his own."
