The Reid family has been struck by tragedy just weeks before the start of the NBA season. Authorities in New Jersey confirmed that 28-year-old Toraya Reid, the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz, was killed in a shooting on September 6.
Reid was fatally shot at the Paragon Apartment complex in Jackson Township on Saturday morning, according to the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.
Police say 29-year-old Shaquille Green, who was in a relationship with Reid, has been charged with murder and multiple weapons offenses.
Police responded to the complex around 11 a.m. and discovered Reid unresponsive near an exit. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Green was later seen running on North New Prospect Road before being taken into custody without incident, prosecutors said.
A subsequent investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutors Office Major Crime Unit, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriffs Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, identified Green who has been in a dating relationship with Ms. Reid as the individual responsible for her death, the prosecutors office announced.
On social media, condolences poured in for the family. Jakahya Reid called the alleged killer a coward and added she prays his loved ones never have to experience this type of pain. She also wrote, My sister has a name. She is not just some girl, Shes not just the [NBA superstar] sister. She has a name and that is Toraya Reid. Respect her (expletive) or dont mention her at all.
Naz Reid, who grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey, is preparing to enter his seventh NBA season. Earlier this summer, he signed a five-year, $125 million contract extension with Minnesota.
In a 2023 interview with MSP Magazine, Naz described his bond with his siblings. Toraya and Jakahya, the 26-year-old said. My older sister is super protective, she treats us like shes our parent.
