Big news could be coming soon for AEW fans hoping to stream pay-per-views on HBO Max.
Andrew Zarian of Mat Men Radio revealed on August 28 that hes heard an update is coming regarding the long-teased plan for HBO Max to host AEW PPV events.
The deal between AEW and Warner Bros. Discovery has long hinted at a deeper integration with the HBO Max platform, but the technical infrastructure on the app reportedly wasnt ready to support live pay-per-view events or a paywall-within-a-paywall system when discussions first began. In fact, some people within AEW and WBD were surprised that the announcement even happened as early as it did.
Even if AEW eventually lands on Max, fans shouldnt expect it to be the exclusive home. Fightful Select reports told that other streaming platforms will still carry AEWs major eventsjust like they do now. Earlier this year, AEW dropped Triller domestically, added Amazon Prime Video as a distributor, and kept Triller available for international audiences.
As for pricing, multiple ideas have reportedly been floated internally. One suggestion included offering HBO Max subscribers a discount on PPV events. Another pitch involved a straight-up $10 discount through the HBO Max interface.
However, there has been no indication that AEW PPVs will be available on HBO Max at no additional cost. That scenario would likely require a full renegotiation of AEWs current deal with Warner Bros. Discovery, as pay-per-view revenue remains a major driver for the company.
Behind the scenes, theres also been talk of pushing HBO Max as the preferred option for ordering AEW PPVs, especially on shows airing on Warner Bros. Discovery networks like TNT and TBS.
An official announcement hasnt dropped yetbut with Max already hosting major WBD content and AEW continuing to expand, the move seems inevitable.
