The AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door event will be taking place this week, but lots of fans are actually shocked at the smaller number of crossover matches between AEW and NJPW. As it turns out, there is actually a very good reason for that.
While speaking during the AEW x NJPW Forbidden media call, Samantha Schipman asked Tony Khan whether future Forbidden Door events would include more AEW vs. NJPW matches.
Tony Khan explained that shifting this years show to take place after the G1 Climax tournament led to changes, which limited involvement from both NJPW and STARDOM. He noted that he was informed most NJPW wrestlers would not be available until the week of the event.
Tony Khan said that NJPW has incredible talent, but television availability plays a big role in planning. He added that he expects future Forbidden Door events to be scheduled before both the G1 Climax tournament and Stardoms Grand Prix to allow for greater participation.
Usually every single Forbidden Door pay-per-view, except this year, had plenty of crossover matches from NJPW and STARDOM and last year even had a few CMLL stars to boot. After all, many fans specifically remember Mercedes Mone and Stephanie Vaquers solid match at last years show.
Although this years Forbidden Door wont showcase as many AEW vs. NJPW matches, the event is still set to be a solid night of wrestling. So we can expect next years Forbidden Door to have more crossover matches at least.
Do you think the Forbidden Door event will still be a great show despite the lesser number of crossover matches? Sound off in the comments.
