Mirra Andreeva is out of the Cincinnati Open after picking up an injury in Montreal and that may be a bad sign ahead of the US Open.

After losing in the Wimbledon quarterfinal to Belinda Bencic, the world No. 5 took some time before kicking off her North American hard-court swing in Montreal. At the Canadian Open - 20 days after her Wimbledon exit - the Russian tennis star had a first-round bye before Bianca Andreescu gave her a walkover in the second round.

When Andreeva finally took to the court in Montreal, she made a slow start and dropped the first set to McCartney Kessler. To make it all worse, she had a nasty fall and injured her ankle.

After receiving a treatment, the 18-year-old managed to play out the entire match but Kessler won 7-6 (5) 6-4.

Andreeva is now out of Cincinnati

Andreeva being able to finish the match against Kessler was an encouraging thing. However, there was no way for the Russian to know the exact severity of the injury before having an MRI after the match. And since she is out of Cincinnati, everything is pointing toward it probably being a bit more serious than initially thought.

On August 24th, the US Open starts. With that being said, Andreeva still has more than two weeks to overcome her injury. However, even if the two-time WTA 1000 champion manages to play in Flushing Meadows, she will enter the tournament lacking matches - which is never a good thing.

But for Andreeva at the moment, certainly the most important thing is to at least be able to play at the US Open.
