Iga Swiatek's winning streak surprisingly fell short of reaching double digits after the Polish tennis star was upset in the Montreal round-of-16.
A month ago, the world No. 3 routinely handled Clara Tauson 6-4 6-1 en route to winning her maiden Wimbledon crown and her sixth Grand Slam.
After winning Wimbledon, Swiatek also won her opening two matches at the Canadian Open. But then, she stumbled across No. 16 seed Tauson, who this time played much better and pulled off a 7-6 (1) 6-3 upset win.
In the first set, the Dane led 5-3 but failed to serve out for the opener. However, the 22-year-old stayed composed and won six points in a row from 1-1 in the tie-break to seal the opening set.
Up by a set, Tauson soon went up by a break in the second set as well. While Swiatek refused to quit and managed to get the break back, the No. 16 once again remained calm and earned herself another break in the eighth game before serving out for the match in the following game.
What Tauson thought when Swiatek got the break back & Who is her next rival?
In her post-match press conference, Tauson was asked how she reacted inside when Swiatek got the break back late in the second set.
"I knew that she was going to keep fighting. Obviously she's a champion, and they never stop fighting. I didn't even feel too bad about getting broken there, because I felt like I was playing the right way. She was just playing better than me in that game," the Dane explained.
"I felt like I had a bit better luck in my returning games, and obviously she started with a double fault in the next game, which gave me a little bit more confidence going into the rest of the points. I felt like I had a little bit of the upper hand in the end of the set. I think I showed that I can keep cool under pressure."
In the Montreal quarterfinal, Tauson plays against Madison Keys.
