Venus Williams had a funny moment during one of her Washington pressers this week as the seven-time Grand Slam champion noted that she would never need advice from Tom Brady or anyone else simply because she never gets out of shape.
After Williams - who turned 45 in June - didn't play any tournaments for 16 and then asked for a Washington main draw wildcard and received, some had been critical of the move and even argued that the former world No. 1 wouldn't be competitive and that it was nothing but a wasted wildcard.
However, it didn't take long before Williams made her doubters eat their words. On Monday, the former world No. 1 collected an impressive 6-3 6-1 doubles win with Hailey Baptiste over Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue. The following day, the American tennis icon also beat 22 years younger Peyton Stearns 6-3 6-4 in singles.
In the NFL, Brady - one of the greatest quarterbacks ever - was 45 when he played his final season two years ago. Since Williams is 45 now and competing at the pro level, one reporter wanted to know whether she sought some advice from NFL giant Brady.
Williams: I never get out of shape so you'd need to ask that question someone else
"I never got out of shape, so you'd have to talk to someone who let themself go. (Laughter) That's not my thing. I stayed in shape. Even if I wasn't playing tennis, I was always in the gym. So I think the only difference now is I think I'm just tighter, but I have always been a very tight individual anyway, so my muscles are even tighter, which maybe is good or maybe is bad. But physically, I feel pretty much the same, like I don't have major injuries that are like killing me or anything like that," the 45-year-old explained.
Meanwhile, Williams went 2-2 in Washington. In singles, the American exited in the round-of-16 following a loss to Magdalena Frech. With Baptiste, the former world No. 1 lost to Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai in the quarterfinal.
